========== WRITTEN TEST ==========

“I can’t believe we really registered, Plutes!”

The halls of the Researcher’s Guild were full of the usual hustle and bustle to be expected on a Monday morning. On this particular day, however, the halls were ever so slightly hustlier and bustlier than normal. Today, a Zubat was zooming through the halls as fast as it could, cheering all the way. If it were going slow enough to get more than a glimpse of, it would be possible to notice a Foongus clinging on for dear life.

As the pair zoomed through the Guild with no particular direction, a voice, smaller than most, but plenty loud enough when snarled directly into a bat’s sensitive ears, joined the other sounds, “Dammit Zubs, slow down!”

The blur of motion stopped almost instantly.

The mushroom didn’t.

With a distinct ‘thwak’, it hit the wall they had been speeding towards and slid down to the floor.

The bat remained still for a second, before realising the slight change in weight. “Plutes!” he cried, diving down to where his companion had fallen…

Just in time to crash into a Flygon, which was dashing round the corner carrying a mountain of important-looking documents. A moment later, the three of them were on the floor in a tangle, surrounded by said documents.

The Flygon was the first to recover, clambering to her feet and rubbing her bruised head. “Ow… oh my gosh, I’m so sorry, I should have been looking where I was going. I’m just really busy and-“

“Ah, no, don’t worry, it was totally our fault!” the bat interrupted. He was down on the ground, crouching as the Foongus climbed up onto his back. The mushroom secured himself, tugged at the Zubat’s ears, and the pair gently rose to head height.

“Your fault, you mean.”  The rider peered over the top of the bat and addressed the Flygon, “Sorry about that. He can get… overexcited sometimes. Not that I blame him this particular time.”

The Flygon smiled at them. “These things happen. But, ah… I hate to ask, but I am rather busy, so would you mind helping me gather my stuff?” She gestured to the mess surrounding them.

“Sure thing!” The bat replied this time. “Try to stay on this time, Plutes.”

It was a slow process, with the Zubat picking up each individual piece of paper and gently moving it over to the Flygon’s waiting arms.

“By the way, I don’t think I’ve seen you guys around here before. Are you visiting the Guild?” she asked.

If the bat had eyes, they would have lit up at the question. “Nope! We just joined the Guild as a team!”

“’Just’ meaning about ten minutes ago”, added the Foongus, “that’s why this numbskull was dashing around the halls at stupid speeds.”

“Ah, I see,” grinned the Flygon, “In that case, I understand completely.” She bowed her head as low as she could without dropping the papers in her arms all over again. “Welcome to the Researcher’s Guild! I’m Kali, one of the Guild Leaders’ assistants here! Sorry, I didn’t get your names…?”

“Pluteus,” said the rider, “and this is Zubby”.

By now all the papers were back in Kali’s arms, and she was craning her neck to peer over the mountain at the pair. Her grin remained, but she cocked an eyebrow, amused. “Funny name for a Zubat.”

“Yeah, well, if genius here wasn’t so bad at naming things, I might have a proper name,” grumbled Zubby.

Kali chuckled, “Well, not to worry. You get all sorts of names here in Andalusst. Pokémon do tend to come here from all over, after all. Speaking of which, did you guys get here from the fog or something?”

Pluteus clicked his tongue for a few seconds. “That… is a long story. In short-“

“Basically Plutes kidnapped me when I was a kid and we went on tons of foggy adventures! Then we met a buncha cool folk and had even more adventures, but we got separated from them in the fog. We wandered around looking for them, but ended up here instead!”

Pluteus rolled his eyes. “Don’t forget to breath,” he muttered. “But that’s the gist of it, yeah.

Kali’s grin had turned to an expression of interest as she listened to Zubby’s story. She looked thoughtful for a moment, the nodded. “Yeah, that’s how it is for a few people, anyway. The bit about finding the town, anyway. The specifics tend to vary quite a bit. Like me, for instance. I’m not an Andalusst native, but figured I’d stick around.” She gasped as another thought struck her, “Come to think of it, now that you’ve been registered as a team, what team name did you pick?”

Zubby grinned at the question. “We are… wait for it…” (At this point, Pluteus buried his head in his hands), “The Defogeers!”

Kali laughed lightly at the name. “That is so much better than the name I first used when I joined. That name was…” She shuddered, “Well, it was bad.” She shook her head, and quickly added, with a curious tilt of her head, “So what’s your reason for joining the guild, anyway? You probably already know, but there are three guilds here in Andalusst. I love the Researchers, but what made you pick this Guild over the Exploreres and the Hunters?”

Pluteus’ eyebrows rose at the abrupt change in topic, but he didn’t comment on it. “We actually arrived here a few weeks ago-“

“You remember we lost those cool folks in the fog? We figure that’s probably happened loads of times. We really wanna help figure out how to get rid of the fog, or at least help figure out ways for Pokémon to find their way through it easily. Once we got out and didn’t have to worry about ourselves as much anymore, we figured joining the Researchers guild was the best was to help with that.” A grin stretched across the bat’s face, “Hence, The Defogeers!”

Kali listened intently with a thoughtful expression. As Zubby finished speaking, she smiled again. “Well, that’s quite the tale! Not many Pokémon come through here with a story like that.” She paused for a second, then nodded thoughtfully, “Yeah, everyone has their own reasons for being here. Some are… better than others.”

Another pause, before she regained her chipper tone, “So that’s the ‘why’ and the ‘how’, what about the ‘what’? What do you guys think made the Guild accept you as a team?”

Pluteus frowned slightly at the question, but her expression was one of genuine curiosity. “Well, given that we’ve been wandering the fog for years now, we’ve got a wealth of experience on how it works, and how to survive in it, meaning we’re able to do field work, as well help contribute to the work done by the Guild. I’m eager to read up on their research and figure out how best to start helping.”

“-Yeah, Plutes here is, like, super smart,” Zubby chuckled, “If it were just me, the Guild wouldn’t even consider accepting me.-”

Pluteus grunted. “Don’t sell yourself short. You’ve got just as much experience with the fog as me, and what you lack in sight you more than make up for with your other senses. I wouldn’t be able to do much without your ability to pick up on things I can’t see.” He snorted, “Or your wings.”

Kali chuckled, “That’s pretty cool. Sometimes I wish I had a better skill set like that; I’d probably be able to help out a lot more around the Guild. All I get to do around here is draw and deliver papers. Well, that and get stuck helping Archie.” At the name, her voice turned almost venomous.

Pluteus raised an eyebrow, “I take it you’re not a fan.”

“I mean sure he’s one of the Guild Leaders, but he’s just so… annoying, always bossing people around, and taking credit for everything and acting like he’s so much smarter than everyone else. And I'm always the one having to put up with him since someone has to help him but everyone else always runs off before they get stuck with him instead!"

Zubby’s ears lowered, “He can’t be that bad, can he? I’m sure he appreciates your help, even if he doesn’t say it.”

Kali let out a huff of frustration. “He could mention it once in a while.” She looks up, suddenly shocked, “Oh my gosh, I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t go running my mouth like that, huh? I do tend to ramble on too much. And I really shouldn’t be bad-mouthing Archimedes, especially not in front of you guys, being new and all…”

Pluteus had climbed to the top of Zubby, and was peering down at the papers in Kali’s arms. “Not to change the subject, but what are those papers about, anyway? There are loads of them-"

A panicked expression struck her, and she looked down at the papers with a jolt, “OH MY GOSH, I completely forgot about these! It’s been really nice talking to you, but I really really need to deliver these! I was late before we started talking!” she cried, already moving as she spoke. Zubby darted out of her way quickly, and the pair watched her go.

Halfway down the corridor, she turned abruptly, whacking a passer-by with her tail as she did so. She attempted to lift an arm to them, but the papers wobbled precariously, and she settled for a grin instead. “It, er, really was nice meeting you! I’ll see you later, I hope?”

Zubby waved a wing at her, and she turned again and stomped off. “She seemed nice, huh, Plutes?”

“Well, she was rather talkative. But yes, she was pleasant enough. Anyway,” he jabbed Zubby in the back, “mush. Let’s go see what this place has to offer.”
